Charity sale : Yamada
This time it was a charity sale and the proceeds were donated to our club. Thank you very much, Mr. Yamada.
There were various items such as 20mm thick drill bits and various types of sandpaper for power tools. Everyone was excited.
Slanted groove processing:Dalton
When making a slant-sided tray, the side plates are spread out like a morning glory, so the groove for the bottom plate is also cut diagonally.
To do this with a groove plane, you will need a jig to slant the side plate.
When cutting an inclined groove, either corner of the blade begins to scrape the material first.
At this time, it will become unstable if there are no skates (supporting plates in front and behind the blade of the grooving plane), so it is important to make sure that the corner of the blade with the skate hits the material first.
Self-made edge plane:SUGA56
Among Western planers, there is something called an edge plane, which cuts end of the wood at right angles. A right-angled fence is integrally cast at the bottom of the plane.
Due to the small size of edge planes, the maximum thickness that can be cut is limited to 22 mm.
To finish the edges of thick materials such as 2×4 at right angles, SUGA56 made a edge plane from a Japanese plane. It is used by inserting a Japanese plane into an attachment with a right-angle fence.
When he cut the wood using this original plane and applied a square to the edge of the wood, it turned out to be a perfect right angle.
SUGA56’s works and jigs not only have innovative ideas, but are also very carefully made and serve as role models for members.
Self-made chamfer attachment for block plane:SUGA56
SUGA56 made a chamfer attachment for his block plane.
To use this jig, place the attachment across the corner of the material, adjust the width, then insert the block plane and cut.
A strong magnet is embedded in the attachment, and a non-slip sheet is pasted on top of it. This will allow the plane to stick together and stay in place.
Miter joint jig : Matsuo
The content of Matsuo’s DIY show presentation is miter joint.
The back side of the photo frame requires a step to drop the transparent plate or presser plate into.
He presented a method to create steps by gluing thin square rods (brown parts) thinner than a photo frame, rather than cutting the wood and creating steps. This will be presented to the visitors in the DIYSHOW2024.
Invisible groove : Sugita
In the case of dovetail joint or box joint, it is necessary to make sure that the groove for the bottom plate is not visible from the outside.
One method is to make the groove from the middle of the material to the middle. This is very difficult to do by hand.
He solved this problem by modifying the skate part of the grooving plane and drilling long holes and round holes in the material at both ends of the groove. According to Sugita, this is a new technology.
