Blade Sharpening Presentation:Mr. Dalton

Mr. Dalton’s plane blade sharpening presentation was held. In Western plane blade sharpening, the sharpening angle is 25°. Not only is the bevel flattened on the whetstone, but in two-stage sharpening, the blade tip is sometimes sharpened to 30°. This is because it makes the blade last longer and can be sharpened quickly. There was also an explanation of rounded blade, which is not accepted in Japan.
Furthermore, methods such as creating hollow (similar to the arch of the foot) during rough grinding with a grinder, which make it easier to feel the angle and sharpen more quickly when sharpening on a whetstone, were introduced. He carefully explained these techniques using wooden models of the blade tips.
Dovetail Joint Demonstration:Mr. Dalton

This is a demonstration of dovetail joint by Mr. Dalton. We have learned a lot about this joinery from him. This time, he gave us a preview of the demonstration he will be performing at the DIY show this month, where the Shinbashi Woodworking Club will be participating. As always, his dovetailing is a masterpiece done entirely by hand. In this jointing, the tail is first cut, and that section is placed on the end grain of the pin board to trace the tail shape. The tightness or looseness of the fit when assembling is determined by how much of the line is left when making the cut. It was a very informative demonstration. Thank you, Mr. Dalton.
