What is a Craftsman Village?
The Craftsman Village is an event under the Shinkiba Woodworking Club, where a few demonstrators showcase their projects, allowing attendees to observe the process and learn useful techniques. This event is free and open to all.
For this event, the demonstrators were Dalton, Sugita, Takahashi, and Terauchi.
Dalton worked on making a traditional Japanese woodworking tool box, Sugita hosted a joinery experience corner, and the Takahashi/Terauchi team ran a leathercraft-based insect-making workshop.

Making a traditional Japanese tool box:Dalton
Dalton demonstrated making a traditional Japanese tool box, which is meant to store Western-style planes.
He took on the challenging task of creating a ‘Tapered Sliding Dovetail Joint’ for the project.
Shaping the groove into a dovetail form is quite challenging, especially since the entrance and exit widths of the groove are tapered. This allows the joint to be tightly secured through a wedging effect when the tenon is pushed in. To achieve this, a tapered dovetail block is mounted on the edge plane.
making a traditional Japanese tool box:Takahashi & Terauchi
Mr. Takahashi and Mr. Terauchi organized a workshop on crafting insects with leather, featuring exceptionally realistic insect brooches. As it was a participatory event, many members had the chance to try leathercraft.
To form the body and legs, the laser-cut insect’s flat shape is moistened and molded, and then glued into place.
They participate in various events about five times a year and run workshops. Here is their YouTube video.
A demonstration of Sugita woodworking method:Sugita
Sugita held a demonstration and hands-on workshop on the Sugita woodwork method.
Using the ripping guide, the three-piece joint and other techniques were demonstrated in detail to the participants, who were able to experience them hands-on.
